Should I Post My Syllabus as Text or Upload a File?

It's best to post your syllabus as straight text so people do not have to download files. On the other hand, when you paste, the wiki will strip out your formatting.

How Do I Post My Syllabus as Text?

Step 1: Create a Link on the Syllabus Menu

  1. Make sure you are a site member to edit.
  2. Go to the Syllabus menu page.
  3. Type your course title in the title box and click "Add My Syllabus." (Include course number and an original title.) A new page will open.

Step 2: Post Your Syllabus

  1. On the new page, paste your syllabus into the edit window.
  2. Use basic wiki code to fix any problems (use the easy buttons above the edit box or go to the Help page). Generally you should keep it simple: make a few things bold, etc.
  3. Click Save.

How Do I Post My Syllabus as a File?

Don't! It's better to post as straight text. People don't like to download files.

But you insist? Ok. Consider making your Word document into a PDF first.

Step 1: Upload Files to the Site

  1. Make sure you are a site member to edit.
  2. Go to the Syllabus menu page.
  3. Important! Make sure your file name does not have any spaces (i.e. TheAmericanExperience.doc rather than The American Experience.doc). File names are also case sensitive.
  4. Click "file" at the bottom of the syllabus page.
  5. Click "Upload new file."
  6. Click "Select Files" to find your file.
  7. Click "Upload File."
  8. Click "Refresh File List" to see your file.

Step 2: Get the File URL

  1. Find the URL of your uploaded file by clicking "file" at the bottom of the page and then "info" next to your file.
  2. Select and copy the "Full File URL" (i.e., http://umassenglishgrad.wikidot.com/local--files/system:syllabi/MySyllabus.doc).
  3. Close the file info box.

Step 3: Create a Link on the Syllabus Menu

  1. Type your course title in the title box and click "Add My Syllabus." (Include course number and an original title.) A new page will open.

Step 4: Post Your Syllabus

[FULL URL LINK The Name You Want to Appear on the Menu Page]

Example:
[http://umassenglishgrad.wikidot.com/local--files/system:syllabi/MySyllabus.doc My Syllabus]
  1. Use basic wiki code to fix any problems (use the easy buttons above the edit box or go to the Basic Help page). Generally you should keep it simple: make a few things bold, etc.
