Essay Prize Deadlines

Monday, March 22nd
The Charles Peters Prize, awarded for the best essay on a subject involving Shakespeare or his contemporaries (inclusive dates: 1485-1660). Award will be made in May at our annual Awards Night.

The Walker Gibson Prize, awarded for the best essay on a subject in Composition and Rhetoric. The author should think of the audience as teachers and scholars in composition studies. Open to graduate students in English. 3,000-7,000 words. One entry per person. Award will be made at the Walker Gibson lecture (TBA) and in May at our annual Awards Night.

Thursday, April 1st
The John Hicks Prize awarded for the best essay on a literary subject not eligible for the Peters Prize. Award will be made in May at our annual Awards Night.

The LeeAnne Smith White Prize, awarded for the best essay on a topic that falls within the broad area of American cultural and literary studies. Any fruitful topic on American culture may be addressed, but essays touching on LeeAnne’s own interests, literature, music, and the visual arts, as well as place, landscape, the environment, and issues of identity, are especially welcome. It may be in the genre of an academic argument as for a scholarly journal or a familiar essay as for a popular venue such as The New Yorker, Harpers, or The Women’s Review of Books. Award will be made on May at our annual Awards Night.

Please note: Students may submit only one essay for each prize category and no essays previously submitted may be submitted in a later year. Contact the English Graduate Program for more information and confirmation of eligibility requirements and deadlines.
